In kunming you can take a bus for 4 hours to Dali, and in Dali there are 3 places to teach, one of them is a buddhist monastery where you can train for about $40 a week, and that includes food, accomodation and 6 hours of training a day.

I had no money but felt an alegiance and was starring at the crowd wantingly when an elder Chinese women offered to sell a ticket.I told her my story and she empathised and gave me a front row seat! It was mostly teens and young adults dressed as monks. It was like a vaudeville show actually. There was so much posing and theatrical build up that I was feeling ripped-off yet I payed nothing! They broke alot of thin cheap wood and mud-brick. I saw the original Monk tour with my master about a decade ago and they were real monks with fire in their eyes and no gimmicks. We had an over zealous student volunteer to strike the monk's gut and his hand had an electric numbing for a week! He called my Sifu for a late night healing the night after that show.A bunch of those original monks fled the tour to start schools here in NYC and Texas.I guess I'm happy that What Da Mo started is thriving but he woud have shunned the sensationalism when there's true merit to share Not greed. I'm thankful for that night's blessing but resent the cheapening and capitalising of ancient austere practices of self perfection. What do you think?

My class has been on hold since the burn due to an instructor needing some time off. I've been doing wing chun for a couple of years, thru 2 1/2 forms and I'm half decent. I'm looking for someone to chi sao with, even if another style. I'm very strong, big and tough to get around, but I know how to control myself. I played with a shao lin style guy awhile back and we both taught eachother a lot.

I'm in richmond but willing to hop on my motorcycle and ride anywhere in the lower mainland.

(usually this is how i am after kung fu!) my teachers told me this is normal because the kind of stretches we do habituate the muscles so when they go back to their old habits it can be painful...but it still seems to me like doing such intensive exercise/intensive stretching should have strengthened my body-not made it weaker the moment i stopped...any thoughts on this?

I spent last spring studying mantis kung fu, but right after I earned my yellow belt I experienced a Series of Unfortunate Events (illness and money loss) that forced me to quit. The money has (at least temporarily) corrected itself, and I'm well for the moment, so I want to get back into it- it gave me a lot of focus and energy.

here's where the stupidity comes in:

I'm completely embarassed that I'm completely out of shape from the 5 month break. I have no strength or stamina left, and my flexibility isn't what it was- I feel like I'm going to have to start at the beginning again. I HATE that, and so am having a hard time getting off my ass and DOING it.
Any words of wisdom for swallowing pride?

tribe is here...i have something to discuss-
most of us learn many sets or forms of Shaolin,
and there seems to be the obvious long fist type
applications, kicks and strikes, mixed with
some chi-na, but in the last couple of years i
started learning a southern style that wants
to stay in grappling range, now when i look
back at the forms of my Northern Shaolin i am
surprised to find all sorts of throws and
applications that happen when you are hip
to hip, similar to throwing arts, and i've always
wondered why the deep bow stances are so
common, when if used like in the movies
someone would just take out your front
leg. Is it that the applications taught that are
obvious- are just bogus, and the inner truth
of the application are kept within the Sifu to
inner circle students, and the rest of us learn
the shell of the art and not the essence?
I hate thinking that i'm just "playing kung-fu"
sometimes i wonder...
