Training in China

So maybe this is old news to most of you, but here it is:

If you're travelling in SE Asia, and feel like heading up to china, you can get up to Kunming pretty easily from northern thailand or Lao.. In kunming you can take a bus for 4 hours to Dali, and in Dali there are 3 places to teach, one of them is a buddhist monastery where you can train for about $40 a week, and that includes food, accomodation and 6 hours of training a day.

Just ask about the Wu Wei Si (si=temple)

There is also a great school - Si Ping City Academy of Martial Arts which is in Ji Lin province. It is a huge monastery where shaolin monks live and teach wushu, chi kong, tai chi and lots of other things. Not from far ago they started a program for learners of mandarin language and if im not mistaken acupuncture aswell. I singed up for one month program and heading there in june! I am a beginner yet but im sure ill learn a lot there!

For another option, WuDang stlye check out damo-qigong.net. You can get all the livein training you want for a pretty reasonable price. I think it was arond $4,000 for 6 months + all your food. The rates might even be more cheaper for longer time commited.

I would be careful of this place (not that it's dangerous or anything)...unless something REALLY changed...They may be only students of a monk teaching there...they are students or disciples, not monks (unless it changed) and that doesn't really gaurantee the real deal in teaching...shoot I'm a layman disciple of a Shaolin monk (just to prove a point). I have also heard through a few people that "said" they have went there that it seemed to be more contemporary wushu being taught there (not that it's bad...it just doesn't have that real shaolin flare to it) so its not the same type of "qi" you would find in lets say...Deng Feng city) there would be something missing if you are going there for the shaolin "flavor". I know its definitely different here in the states when our Shifu teaches and when a senior student teaches. The physical was very good and I'm not dissing my seniors fu...but even they would say they would rather have shifu teach. LOL Most of the hot schools with authentic Shaolin MONKS are located near the temple in the neighboring town of Deng Feng and if i dig around, there are phone numbers and addresses available.

Hope this helps and i am interested in hearing about the experience Snowflake! I hope you jump on the message board when you get back!

***A very good source of Shaolin information is www.russbo.com (the forum section) and ezine's kung fu magazine online has quite a good bit of informative info about various monks and shaolin teaching/traditions.

Yeah you r right. It was a little bit of dissapointment for me not to find any monks in that temple or anything that would remind me somehow of a monastery except the massive chinese style front entrance gate. During my stay there were wu shu, shaolin, ba ji, sanda (chinese kickboxing) and ba gua groups. I stayed one week in wushu but after freaking acrobatic lessons, i switched to more grounded and gentle traditional shaolin group, which i enjoyed a lot. It was my first acqaintance with the martial arts and pretty much enjoyed the outline of the course. It was basically all day training starting from 5 am till 4.30 with meal breaks. The red coloured rules posted on website were not that strict at all and we would ocasionaly drink and smoke at the academy without any problems. The closest city is hour ride on cab where we used to get massages for just 40 kuai, buy food (food at the academy wasnt that healthy, pretty much all deep fried and greecy), get other necessary things.
I liked location very much. The academy is situated on the top of mountain from which you can see the valley, tiny villages, rice and corn fields. Just outside of our gate there is a Ye he ancient castle, which was built 40 years ago for some movie. Now it is a museum and there are many tourists coming onthe weekends. They always asked to take picture with me, so after five days of constant photoshooting i started asking for money in order to avoid that torchure... huh. All the students were cool, everyone from states or england, iceland spanish and me the only russian!
The thing i didnt like was the slow method of teaching. In one month of training i learned only one dao form, tantuei spring kicks, and half of tai chi 40.
There were mandarin and chin na classes which i never attended. I looved meditation classes, very simple and effective method involving gardening of dan tien, reversed breathing and trea poses.
I realy enjoyed this training. I guess i was looking for some different type of vacation, so whatever this school offered was quite satisfying and if i have an oportunity to return for another month id go for it!
